Gear Heaven: Dialing In Your Sound While Learning At The Same Time

I am the type of person that likes to always be learning or else I feel stagnant or predictable.  One way for me to keep learning is to introduce a new piece of gear that is different is color/sound texture or purpose.  This year I added multiple new mic preamps that are tube or solid state or in between, which really opens up the soundscape, and also a mastering EQ and compressor.  All of them has changed the sonic pallet and the mastering gear has changed my workflow. Of course the sound quality is phenomenal.

Bass Buildup? Try a Bigger Room – Recording Cello In The Studio

Michael RonstadtMichael Ronstadt is a very accomplished cellist and is our number one choice when it comes to recording strings in the studio. In the past I’ve recorded Michael in our vocal room (which is acoustically dead for a very produced sound), but lately I’ve put him in the live room and utilized our new mobile absorption panels. This gives us flexibility in adjusting the reflections around him while avoiding the bass buildup typically found in smaller rooms and keeps the cello’s natural low mids from getting muddy. Michael just finished tracking Farther to Run by Lori Sumberg and is currently working on Todd Whisler’s progressive album. Maybe the distortion pedal will make an appearance!

Laying Down The Groove With Barry Sparks

2014-05-03 13.39.22Recently I got the chance to work with Barry Sparks in the studio. For those who do not know Barry, he is one of the world’s top bassists, with a career that includes work with legendary acts like Yngvie Malmsteem, MSG, Ted Nugent, Dokken, Scorpions, and more. I actually used to play in his band for a while and recorded drums for his full-length release Don’t Look Back. Since Barry is touring the world I never get to see him, so it’s always a special treat to be playing alongside him in the studio. The amount of energy and soul that he brings to recordings is like no other. It’s crazy how musical he is – most of the songs he tracked he had only heard a minute or two before, and the takes he laid down are definitely keepers! Check out this video: notice his left hand adds vibrato by bending certain notes and his right hand is blazing – all while sight reading!
